Seedly Communities vs Whop Nobody can freeze you
Whop is free until you sell something. Then it is a business partner taking a cut of every sale, with the power to hold your payouts while you wait on support. Seedly Communities runs your paid community through your own Stripe account, for $399 once. Nobody upstream.

The honest version
Custody is the product.
Whop's model has real appeal, and we will not pretend otherwise. Zero dollars a month, marketplace distribution, a slick checkout, and a genuinely solid public API. For getting a paid Discord or a digital product live this afternoon, it works.
The documented pattern is what this page is about. Trustpilot and BBB reports describe sellers with more than $25,000 frozen across their businesses, one citing $19,200 held in a rolling reserve. Suspended sellers past 120 days with their checkout left open and new revenue diverted into what one called an unannounced 90-day reserve. Complaints describing suspensions as permanent with no recourse. When the platform is your merchant of record, your revenue is theirs to schedule.
Seedly Communities cannot hold your money because it never touches it. Members pay through your own Stripe account, on your own payout schedule, with a 0% platform fee.

Competitor pricing, fees, and review scores verified July 2026 from vendor pricing pages and cited third-party sources. Plans change often, so confirm current details on each vendor's site. Seedly Communities is a one-time license plus your own hosting on accounts you control.
The math that matters
A percentage forever, or $399 once.
Whop's cost scales with your success. At $2,000 a month in sales, third-party fee analyses put the effective cut around $1,570 a year, roughly $7,850 over five years. At $5,000 a month it is about $3,900 a year, near $19,600 over five years. The better you do, the more you pay, forever.
Seedly's cost ended at $399. Your members pay through your own Stripe, so you pay Stripe's standard 2.9% plus 30 cents, which Whop sellers are effectively paying inside the composite anyway, and nothing else. Nobody upstream can pause it, reserve it, or reschedule it.
Add your own hosting on Convex and Vercel, free tiers to start. If you buy Seedly CRM in the same order, the community platform add-on is $150.
The whole point
No partner you never chose.
A platform that takes a percentage is a business partner you never chose. Whop optimizes for starting fast. Seedly optimizes for still being in business in year five with 100% of your revenue and no one upstream who can freeze it.
There is also marketplace gravity to consider. Selling on a marketplace means competing inside it, your buyers see the category, not just you. On your own domain there is no aisle of competitors next to your checkout.
Getting out
Getting out of Whop, honestly.
Credit where due, Whop's export story is real. Its API and dashboard let you pull your members and their emails, which is more than most rental platforms allow. Use it.
Export the member list, invite everyone through Seedly's invite links and email invites, stand up your tiers on your own Stripe, and run both in parallel while subscriptions re-anchor with fresh opt-ins. No importer exists on our side.

Straight talk
When Whop is the right call
If you want marketplace discovery, zero dollars upfront, and checkout live in an afternoon, and you accept the custody trade, Whop is genuinely effective. Its public API is also broader than ours today, and that is worth saying plainly.
Seedly is for sellers who already have an audience and want the asset, not the aisle.

Questions, answered
Seedly Communities vs Whop, the common questions
Whop is free. Why pay $399?
Because Whop is paid in percentages. At $2,000 a month in sales the effective fees run around $1,570 a year per third-party analyses, so the free platform costs more than the $399 license in year one and keeps costing every year after. Seedly's take rate is 0% because your members pay your Stripe directly.
Can anyone freeze my payouts on Seedly?
No platform sits above you. Members pay into your own Stripe account on your own payout schedule. To be completely straight, Stripe itself applies its own risk rules to every merchant, including you, but there is no second company upstream with a suspend button.
Do I lose Whop's marketplace traffic?
Yes, and we will not soften it. Whop's marketplace and discovery are real distribution. If you do not yet have an audience of your own, that trade matters. If you do, ownership usually wins it back fast.
How do payments actually work?
You connect your own Stripe keys, then set up subscription tiers with monthly and annual pricing, free trials, and coupons. Members check out through Stripe on your account, and there is no platform fee coming back to us, structurally there cannot be.
What do I need to run it?
Your own Convex, Vercel, and Stripe accounts plus a guided deploy weekend. It is source you own, deployed on infrastructure you control, so your storefront and your community live on your domain, not a marketplace.
